"Nuclear Nightmare"

With the threat of a Nuclear meltdown hovering around Japan's Fukushina Nuclear Power plant....the Nuclear Plants in India are at the epicentre of nuclear debate.

Before Japan's recent earthquake followed by Tsunami, all the debate around Nuclear needs have been, whether we should go ahead for the Nuclear deal with the United States or not???  but now the issue is totally different and it is, " Do we have accident free Nuclear energy???

Undoubtedly we can say that Japan is one of the best country as far as disaster management is concerned, their people have been trained for so many years to face the worst situation that can come after earthquake or Tsunami.....But in spite of all that preparations and competency they are  just not able to control the situation with the Nuclear Plants...at the same time when we look at India we have neither got such disaster management policies nor the expertise to fight this sort of natural disaster especially when there is Nuclear Plant involved into it.

Our experts have an opinion that today's need can be met by Fossil fuels, wind and Solar energy, but for the future Nuclear energy is the only option we have to look for. At the moment Nuclear energy contributes just 3% of India's Power generation and our Government is planning this share to go nearly 25% by the year 2050. Over the next few decades India is planning to spend an estimated $175 billion in importing new Nuclear Generation Power Plants from the US, France and Russia.

But don't forget that, when our Stock market grew we had Scams there.......When India's mobile fone's network expanded like anything, we had the famous historical 2G Scam there.....

And now when our Government is planning to pour so much into the Nuclear Power Industry...........
How can we be sure that there will not be any Hershad Mehta or A.Raja again ???

The Japanese crisis might well be a wake-up call  for India...Are we going to heed the alarm or simply press the Snooze button ???

  2. We can only hope whatever plants we have are safe, the government seems to be pretty confident about this fact, but then as you mentioned who knows whether we have a Raja here as well

  6. I am sorry, history is not kind to the planners in India because our politicians are more interested in personal gains in Swiss banks and not so much about the nation.
Is there something called effective disaster management set up in the country?

  7. regarding your last question, the newspaper reports that all the precautions have been taken and we are well equipped to face disasters especially the koodangulam plant is in a quake prone area. Hope they are right!

  8. Nobody (even God) should not have doubt on our capabilities to tackle the adverse situation. Our Disaster Management Team is best in the world that even Japan is envy of.

During last Tsunami, our team displayed excellent performance and our politicians debated round the clock on TV.

We have millions of religious structures scattered all over streets, middle of the road, in between railway station, at every park and therefore, we should not worry for Safety of our Nuclear Plants, God is there to take care of everything.

  9. .

ha ha ...Beautiful comment by stranger .

Honestly speaking , I have lost faith in present government and I'm against the decision regarding nuclear deal.

Govt who is unable to deal with rapists in India will surely fail to manage any kind of disaster.

Further about A Raja type of people - They will certainly multiply like virus and bacterias.

  11. @Vivek: No doubt, Nuclear Energy is the only viable option for future and there is no argument on that issue.... the point of argument is that, "whether these Nuclear Plants r safe enough or not?".... and i have doubt on this.... BTW welcome here and hope to see you more often now, thanx a lot.

@Rachna: Very right, there must be honest analysis before going further into it.

  13. i just get frightened thinking of earthquake in Japan, a force so gr8 that it pushed Japan's land mass few feet closer to America and a force that even shook the planet, shifting the earth's axis by about four inches.
Lets just hope that people in our country just feel the heat and put some more effort honestly into the disaster management programmes.

  21. This is it. Anything that is high on the political agenda now becomes the highest on the list of scams too. It has been happening for years and will continue on future too. We can only hope for the best.

  22. i don't like the whole idea of nucelar power...used for whatever purpose. Why can't we people live in that kind of world which god crafted for us....we make things and in turn they harm us....

  23. A thought provoking one..I used to be silent when some crucial discussions pop up. In such cases, I like to be a listener rather than a speaker..This was one such post..

  24. Most likely India will continue with Nuclear technology. It will be made safer. Similar problems exist for electricity..e,g. if someone touch a wire..current can kill but we have made it safer. Same will happen to nuclear.

  25. Quite a lot of question worth noticing and answering..
You have a very nice blog :)

  26. ...Well after reading all these comments I have nothing much to-say!

  30. I just hope the plants are safe... Atleast after whatever happened in Japan we should take up this thing seriously rather than leaving it on fate to decide...

  31. I have always been apprehensive about the Nuclear Energy thing;maybe we should research more about utilizing the renewable sources of energy which are much cleaner and safer than going for dangerous and costlier Nuclear Power!

  32. @AH: hhmm..lets hope for the best..thanks AH.

@swati: liked ur views here... thank you.

@Tomz: thanks for stopping by dear.

  33. @A :you are right even Electricity can be fatal some times but this is restricted to the person gets in touch with it, where as nuclear exposure is harmful for the whole surrounding and its effects can haunt us for years... thank you sir.

@Alcina: welcome here and thanks for the compliments.... hope to see you more often now.

@Harman: thanks a lot for stopping by here.

  34. @Thinking: thank you.

@simran: Thank you Simran... i feel honored.

  35. @Tanishka: you are right this is something should be taken seriously by the authorities concerned.

@Anu: yaa...we should try for the alternates but looking at the demand its not possible to overlook Nuclear energy in the future but safety measures must be full proof.
