While surfing the news paper, I got stuck at one news, it was like "The union food and consumer minister is looking into the ways of curbing food wastage at wedding and other such social events"... and one of the main idea to minimize the food wastage according to him is "the one dish rule at the wedding...."
So friends if the ho'nble minister has his way, you may have a wedding invitation with a line at the bottom stating.... "According to government orders guests will be served only one dish...."
Now imagine if you are in a Gujarati wedding you may get only "Oondhiya with Rotlas", and if you happen to be in Bihar it may end up with "Litti-Chokha" or a bowl of "Sattu"....and don't get surprised if you find only some Italian dish at the Congress Party meet....
Well, it may sound funny but looking at the food wastage in marriages and other social functions, I think its not a bad idea if government finally make it a rule of serving only one dish in such occasions...
One may say that in our culture its rude to serve guest only one dish, even when we eat at home we have more than one dish...but i think, what ever may be tradition or culture, having heaps of left overs after wedding certainly amounts to insensitivity in a country that is 67th on the list of 122 poorest countries...where according to reports about 40 million people go hungry every day.
But the important question is, in a free country like ours where we don't even like to follow the simple traffic rules....where our Government can't force people to have only two kids...how can the ho'nble Minister expect our people to serve one dish at weddings???
The minister probably forgot how much he had for lunch that day! A crazy idea indeed, let's first start driving with a license!
ReplyDeleteLiked your humor in this article a lot.. I got freshened up with your words.. :D
ReplyDeleteideas that our honorable minister has put forward, i find is ridiculous. instead he must look into the matters where cereals, grains and vegetables get dumped without being distributed properly, in stores and out stores and for the loss many farmars are motivated to suicides. that will be a proper way of tasting and not wasting food for thought.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Irfan..you always come up with such issues which are so important, and yet we never pay attention to..the amount of money actually wasted by the ministers in socializing, travelling, and other such so called "party expenditures"..can go up to a staggering amount..When will they stop thinking about themselves??
ReplyDeletehehhe crazy :D minsiter as usual :P) well done !!
ReplyDeletewell said Irfan ! Democracy mein kai tamaashe hote hain !
ReplyDeleteIt is a good idea but hardly seems practical. As usual, it is mostly meant for effect.
ReplyDeleteits not going ot work ..
ReplyDeletewho we kidding .. if that minister stops taking bribe he can feed most of the people who go hungry i think ...
Bikram's
and what about the wastage of public money on this good for nothing ministers ???/
ReplyDeleteWasting food is insane regardless if we are rich or poor country. Very good post.
ReplyDeleteJust to let you that I copied your 'shair' on mother to facebook (of course I said it is from you) and people really liked it. Thanks :)
There used to be a similar rule during the 70s, where inspectors would walk into any wedding and "settle" the issue.
ReplyDeleteThis will only lead to corruption, and why not? Isnt that the common factor all around us.
Incidentally, will Ministers stop Ifttar parties serving over 100 dishes?
in here pakistan ,one of our minister tried to prove himself as SMART too irfan but did not work ,
ReplyDeletei think politicians are head of the family so if they want their people to follow such rules , they must do it first ,
great wriing.god bless
nice point u raised dude bt lets see how many ears hear it positively, nywaz i did

ReplyDeleteYou are very much right Irfan. Shocking realities of the poverty of a country which is boasting itself as a emerging superpower in few decades is simply inestimable. A shame indeed.
ReplyDeleteThough we proud to hear such sorta rare glimpses of good things from our rulers, it will never yield true happiness unless our people mindsets at least try to inherit them for such noble causes.
Also, I would like to say, in fact you might have come across such news also that few people used to preserve and supply the extra foods which left remain to Orphan homes, Destitudes and Old Homes by not trashing them. That's not definitely a bad idea.
If this is really true..then hum you need to elect better people ( I know so could we) The Government is involved in to much now never mind telling us how much to eat and serve.

what a funny way of curbing wastage?
ReplyDeleteA great post with a good humor and an even better message... But at the end of the day we know that its not that simple... Change is really difficult to implement...
ReplyDeleteAnd don't get surprised if you find only some Italian dish at the Congress Party meet....I like that line and your sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteIn India there are super planners and equally super followers.New files opens every morning and closes by evening. It's not done until it's done.Nice thought by mantri ji though.
When The Heart Speaks
Wonderful Sir! It's really big problem, in marriages, and even in restaurants too. I remember, one of our close relative, in the marriage of their son, asked without any hesitation, how many from your family will come in marriage, or nobody? I liked this, to save food wastage and money wastage too. But Politicians should start this from their marriage parties.
ReplyDeleteYou have pointed the big problem, with very light mood! Liked it!
Your visitors count is 9555! A special no. when I am here.
ReplyDeleteThe Hon'ble Minister will spend crores of his ill gotten wealth on his progeny's wedding and spread a feast for his guests.
ReplyDeleteAnd in a country known for treating weddings as the reason for their existence - wonder how practical such a suggestion will be.
what ails us is not lack of rules, but lack of will to follow them, so as somebody said above, this will lead to further corruption only......but I agree that food should not be wasted.....loved the Italian angle...:D
ReplyDeleteHi Irfan! Nice to be back after so long. You know what? I am following you right?
ReplyDeleteBut I haven't been seeing any of your latest posts listed on my Blogger Dashboard and today I just wanted to stop by and say hello and ask why no posts lately, and I am shocked to see so many that I missed!!
I am so sorry Irfan. It is not my fault, it is Google to be blamed :)
As always, your humor leaves me smiling.. especially the Italian table :))
We might do 101 things that’s apparently impressive, but if there is no transparency and accountability, it s all in vain…
ReplyDeleteI think it's just another open invitation for bribing! There is no way people will serve just one dish to guests! But then I do agree that food must not be wasted! If planned well, this can be avoided, I think!
